To celebrate World Philosophy Day 2022, UNESCO and Le Fresnoy - National Studio of Contemporary Arts organize a symposium and exhibition on the theme "The Human of the Future" at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, Room II, from 16 to 18 November 2022.
What do we call human today?
The “human” has always been defined in terms of its own evolution and historical development. But has our contemporaneity subjected it to an upheaval such that it, the “human”, overflows and exceeds its own historical becoming? In other words, are we today facing a metamorphosis, a “turning point” at which the “human” is radi-cally transformed and carried towards something other than itself – something other than the defi-nition, the determination, the identity deployed in and by its own history? Are we witnessing a transfiguration such that the traditional distinc-tion between the being and the becoming of humanity is boldly surpassed? Does the figure of “the human to come” exceed – and in what sense? – the essentialist and humanist determination of the human? And furthermore, how, today, can we confront this unprecedented figure of the human to come? Moreover, will we not be dealing with a multiplicity of figures of the coming human?
This is both a political and philosophical demand, and some would add an ethical duty: to think in the direction of these new manifestations of the human and thus of the humanities. From what place and from what law can we embody this philosophical and political demand? And how will this profound alteration of the human modify our thinking, and what will be the political consequences of this mutation in the history of humanity?
These philosophical, political and ethical ques-tions are also central to the work of artists, filmmakers and architects. Their different approaches, their singular way of thinking in images, and in particular of reflecting on the places and spaces of experience, will create a certain interval at the heart of our common research and will open up a different view of our contemporaneity and the alterations that are taking place in it.
The “L'humain qui vient” research group, founded at Le Fresnoy — Studio national des arts contem-porains in 2019 and directed by Alain Fleischer (Le Fresnoy), Olivier Perriquet (Le Fresnoy) and Raphael Zagury-Orly (Institut catholique de Paris, Collège International de Philosophie, Paris), is a partnership with the CRAL at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS), the Ecole Supérieure d’Art et de Design de Reims the Fondation pour l’Innovation Politique (Fondapol), the LASCO IdeaLab of the Institut Mines-Télécom, Penn State University (USA), and the School of Philosophy, University College Dublin (Ireland). For more than three years it has been conducting seminars and conferences, workshops and interdisciplinary academic meet-ings on the fundamental question of the future of humanity in the light of contemporary tech-nological and scientific advances
We think it is vital, on such an important issue, to bring together a variety of fields of knowledge, in order to provide a multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural perspective, a dimension that UNESCO can ideally foster.

For the duration of the conference, an exhibition will be presented in the Mirő room, bringing together the photographic works of Hugo Deverchère, Stéphanie Roland and SMITH, as well as films by Moufouli Bello, Emanuele Coccia, Fernando Colin Roque, Bianca Dacosta, Nicolas Gourault, Louis Henderson, OV, Momoko Seto, Hadrien Tequi, Yuyan Wang, Agata Wieczorek, produced by Le Fresnoy – Studio national des arts contemporains.
