Fraktur is the name of a font that synthesised the Gothic characters used in Germanic countries from the 16th to the 20th century. It was Germany’s official font up to 1941, and the one in which Richard Strauss expressed himself all his life, right up to the composition of the Metamorphoses. It is distinctively compact and angular, forming staccato sequences with strong verticals, and is generally associated with the mystical temperament.
Fraktur is a film about writing and alienation: a corporeal, musical and handwritten writing whose friction gives the film is language.
