De Jane Leblond, installation 2009
"it is only a rectangle of white light. But it is all films. We can never see more within our rectangle, only less. (...) So if we want to see what we call more, which is actually less, we must devise ways of subtracting, of removing one thing and another, from our white rectangle." Hollis Frampton on cinematographic projection in A Lecture, 1968. SET is an installation presented in the form of an empty workspace; movie set or theater stage. The décor is comprised of familiar elements: a window, a door, a partition, a seat. A carriage moves along a dolly rail projecting a rectangle of white light. the device collapses the moment at which images are produced into that at which they are shown in a space that might be occupied or observed. There is a priori no storyline, just a light script: movement and intensity. Light and shadow appear, distort, disappear, dazzle, open or close, underline, frame, move, oscillate, transform into a detail or an environment. We are actors or viewers and our perception of space veers between abstraction and narration.
